Optional: smoked vegetables such as bell pepperszucchini, or mushrooms
Instructions
Preheat your smoker to 225°F (110°C) using your preferred wood chips for smoking (hickory or mesquite work well for this recipe).
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until the onion is softened.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. If you're using smoked vegetables, you can add them to the sauce now for additional flavor.
In a separate bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, and ricotta cheese.
Now it's time to assemble the lasagna. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce, followed by a layer of the cheese mixture. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of sauce on top.
Place it in the preheated smoker. Smoke the lasagna for about 1 hour, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are slightly crispy.
Once the lasagna is done, remove it from the smoker and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your delicious smoked lasagna!
