Easy Waldorf Salad Recipe

The Waldorf Salad is a classic American dish that originated in the late 19th century at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Known for its refreshing and crisp combination of apples, celery, and walnuts, this salad has been a beloved staple for generations.

It’s often served as an appetizer or a light side dish for Chicken Gyro, Lightly Fried Grouper Sandwich, or Turkey and Cheese Roll Ups. Or this version could easily be a main course by adding diced chicken!

I first had one in a relatively odd spot – the Chocolate Emporium in Orlando. They altered the classic recipe some to include chicken and a few other things. This is my take on their version of it. As you know the classic doesn’t get mixed with lettuce. This one does to create a super easy light salad!

Tips and Tricks

  • Apple Varieties: Use a mix of apple varieties to add depth to the salad. Granny Smith apples provide a tart contrast, while Red Delicious or Fuji apples add sweetness.
  • Prevent Browning: To prevent the apples from browning, you can toss the diced apples in a little lemon juice before mixing them with other ingredients.
  • Greek Yogurt Substitute: For a lighter version, substitute half or all of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. This will give a tangy flavor and reduce the calorie content.
  • Add Protein: For a more substantial salad, consider adding diced cooked chicken or turkey. This can transform the Waldorf Salad into a satisfying main course.
  • Dried Fruits: Add a handful of dried cranberries or raisins for an extra layer of sweetness and texture.
  • Herbs: Fresh herbs like parsley or mint can add a refreshing twist to the salad.
  • Nut Alternatives: If you’re not a fan of walnuts or have allergies, try using pecans, almonds, or sunflower seeds for a different crunch.

Enjoy your classic Waldorf Salad as a refreshing appetizer or a delightful side dish that brings a touch of history and elegance to your table!
