Navy Beans in a Instant Pot /CrockPot Express
No need to soak the beans
- Set to Saute
- Add bacon and butter til hot.
- Add the onions and garlic – cook for two minutes
- Add the chopped ham and carrot and cook for an additional 4 minutes
- Add the beans and broth
- Set to “BEANS” and cook until done. About 40 minutes
*** Should only take about 20 minutes if you soaked the beans
Navy Beans- Stove Method
Better if you soak the beans
- Soak the beans overnight in water covering the beans by 1 inch.
- In a dutch oven or large pot, add bacon and butter til hot.
- Add the onions and garlic – cook for two minutes
- Add the chopped ham and carrot and cook for an additional 4 minutes
- Add everything to the pot. Bring to a boil, cover and lower heat to simmer for 4 hours or until beans are soft.
Navy Beans in a Slow Cooker

- In a frying pan, add bacon and butter until hot.
- Add the onions and garlic – cook for two minutes.
- Add the chopped ham and carrot and cook for an additional 4 minutes
- Add everything to the slow cooker and cook on high for 8 hours.
*** Should only take about 4 hours if you soaked the bans
Tips to Soak Beans Quickly:
- Rinse your beans in a colander with cool water. Pick through and discard any little stones that may be packaged with them accidentally.
- Cover the beans in a pot with about 2 inches of water.
- On high heat, bring the water to a boil and cook the beans for 5 minutes without a lid.
- Remove the pot from the heat and cover with a lid. Let the beans soak in the hot water for an hour.
- Drain the beans into a colander, rinse and then cook according to your favorite recipe.

Southern Cajun Navy Beans
Ingredients
- 16 oz white navy beans
- 3 cups of chicken stock
- 1 cup diced ham or ham hock - or sausage diced
- 1 tbsp bacon grease
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic crushed
- 1/2 large
- yellow onion chopped into bite size pieces
- 1/2 cup carrot cut into cubes
- 1 tsp cajun seasoning Slap Ya Mama or any other
- OR 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/2 tsp cayenne, 1/2 tsp thyme **Add all if you like a little spice!!
- 1 tsp of liquid smoke
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 tsp salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Put the beans in a pot and cover with water by about an inch. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes. Drain, set aside
- Heat bacon grease in a pot on medium heat, add garlic and onion saute until translucent (about 5-7mins)
- Throw in carrots - stir occasionally - let cook for another 3 minutes
- Add ham/sausage if you're using them now, stir well. Cook for 3 or 4 more minutes
- Season with salt and pepper Add cajun seasoning , bay leaf, liquid smoke , smoked paprika/cayenne etc
- Stir and let cook for another 2 minutes - making sure everything is mixed well. Pour in chicken stock bring to a boil
- Reduce heat to low. Add white beans Cover and let simmer for about 1 hour - stirring every 15 to 20 minutes. Add more if necessary.
- After 60 mins add butter and stir through Remove from heat. Now, your beans should be cooked through. You can serve then with some fresh hot cornbread!!
