Southern Buttermilk Pie

Southern Buttermilk Pie is one of those little known recipes that will blow you away. It can be served as a dessert, but it is equally good with the addition of some fruit to make it a breakfast item. Buttermilk pie tastes similar to crème brûlée but more like a custard. The best part is, you can mix in just about anything and it just gets better – consider chocolate, lemon juice, fruit puree or anything else!

The ingredients are simple and common enough that you should have no problems locating them at your local grocery store or farmer’s market, and the preparation only takes about 15 minutes before baking.

Does Southern Buttermilk Pie need to be refrigerated?

While you can leave it out for a few days. I always say it is best to refrigerate it. After the pie cools to room temperature, you should cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator.

Why did my buttermilk pie not set?

There are three big reasons why your pie might not have set: First, under cooking the pie. If you don’t cook it long enough, the pie won’t set. Second, not have the right mixture of ingredients. Too much of one or not enough of another can greatly alter this recipe. Third, not letting it set long enough. These need to set up for a while. If it still seems runny, let it set a little longer.

Does Southern Buttermilk Pie go bad?

Yes, it will go bad. The buttermilk pie will last longer if refrigerated, but it certainly will not spoil even if you leave it at room temperature for a day or two.

How do you make buttermilk out of regular milk?

It’s simple, really. Just add one tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a measuring cup and fill it to the one-cup line with milk. Stir well, then let sit for five minutes before using in a recipe. That’s all there is to it!
